The custom customer order

I finished it last night after I once again earned my Best Wife Award for going to the AZ D’Backs baseball game with the husby, I hand slip stitched the lining closed and added the lovely vintage button for closure. I so wanted to finish it before I leave for PARIS, wha? where? PARIS!, and I did. See below:

The woman who ordered it requested an Evelyn Market Tote in a slightly larger size, with larger interior pockets, and she selected the fabric combinations – which at first I wasn’t so sure about, but I think it turned out pretty nifty.

I do find custom orders difficult as we have a fair idea of what works….and my area being quilts, well can’t have inferior fabric…one friendship ended because I told my friend that the fabric she got was not of the same quality as the rest I was using and it would deteriorate more rapidly…it was from a $1 store and terrible quality. She had wanted me to hand sew and quilt a baby quilt which would need a lot of washing ….she ended our friendship of over 10 years!

What I do not get is why people pay for things to be made out of Ikea fabric…it is mass produced and the idea of handmade is surely to have something fairly individual? I see it a lot though on crafter’s blogs..perhaps its the fair trade thing, they feel they are helping the people who grew the cotton…but I think they just like it.

Paris must be approaching rapidly or maybe that should be the other way around…and you are sewing right up to departure…you are a a trooper!

I like the IKEA fabric, it’s a nice weight and quality for the totes…all fabric unless one weaves their own, is mass produced, no? What makes each tote or quilt or anything we make unique is our individuality that goes in to each piece. There will be no other tote just like this one out there, nor I’m sure are each of your handmade quilts identical. :)

That’s a terrible thing, to end a friendship over fabric! Sorry to hear that.

Paris is TOMORROW! I leave bright and early! thank you!
